Before you go ahead and pronounce to Siri “musicals and plays near me”, you should consider setting some high standards, as there are shows which can literally change your life here in the city of London.

Meaning that the research is done, this article can redirect you toward the most popular plays and musicals. So, enough of the chit-chat, let’s get into it. The best plays and musicals in London:

Les Misérables

London Les Miserables Musical

If you’ve seen the film, then don’t bother. That would be the worst piece of advice I could give. Despite having the same plot line, Les Misérables can capture your attention and emotion on levels you may not have known existed. For one, the singing is so much better in the West End, and the actors are sensational.

For those of you living under a rock, Les Misérables is a love story based on the French Revolution, which not only captures the essence of the historical context, but its presentation of love is timeless and can hit home to a modern audience. One of the best-selling musicals of all time.

Mary Poppins

The West End theatre has gone through a long period of dark themes, and to have a show so light and loveable makes Mary Poppins stand out. You know when you’re on Netflix and decide to switch on a feel-good programme like Modern Family or Friends, well… watching Mary Poppins at the West End is like doing that. You’re guaranteed to have a good time, feel upbeat and believe that the world is your Oyster.

The Phantom of the Opera

London The Phantom of The Opera Musical

A highly sophisticated option that requires attention. But… don’t worry, this will seem like an effortless effort as the production will undeniably take your mind through an emotional rollercoaster, if you’re prone to goosebumps then wear a jumper for this one! The plot is original, based on a spectre who haunts a theatre but becomes dumbfounded by a talented signer and in the end… You nearly got me!

Life of Pi

London Life of Pie Musical

A personal favourite of mine! I was sceptical after watching the movie and reading the book, thinking that the plot had been ruined, I was proven wrong. It simply didn’t matter. The plot is excellent. It begins with a sinking cargo ship resulting in a young man being stranded on a lifeboat left to survive. Where that sounds terrifying already, wait until he realises that he is not alone. In fact, on the boat there is a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan, and a great Bengal Tiger.

Ghost The Musical

London Ghost Musical

Despite often being criticized for its lack of heart and soul, Ghost is another fine choice. It also keeps this article’s theme of theatre productions about Phantoms and spirits. Anyways, Ghost is based on two lovers who are attacked on the way home, leaving the couple in a desperate situation. I don’t want to spoil what happens next, but I’ll let your imagination play out.

MAMMA MIA!

London Mamma Mia Musical

Ahh, here we go again! If you haven’t heard of MAMMA MIA! Then to be honest you should probably give up trying to be a normal person. This is probably the best-known chick flick movie brand of all time, and credit is served where its due. The theatre production in the West End won’t let you down either. It’s a tale of love, betrayal, unity, and adventure. If you can get your hands on one of the best musicals in London tickets, then do it.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Similarly to MAMMA MIA! Harry Potter has already made a record breaking name for itself. The chances are you have read or watched at least one story of the Harry Potter series, so why not add another. This production is written by J.K. Rowling herself so you already know its going to be special.

The Lion King

London The Lion King Musical

When I found out that my childhood movie was being reformed into a play, I was beside myself. Any chance to watch this story in a new light I would snap up in seconds. This show holds great themes, and excellent character development, and takes you to the magic of Africa that you have only dreamt about. Awesome battle scenes as well for you thrill-seekers.

Grease the Musical

London Grease Musical
London Grease Musical

Coming of age show based in the 50s. Full of dance, full of song this is definitely a feel-good production. It is based on a romance between a young couple who go into a summer of fun and adventure. Themes of passion and jealousy make this a rollercoaster show.

The Book of Mormon

London The Book of Mormon Musical
London The Book of Mormon Musical

If you are unable to see past your political agenda, then don’t watch this. If you are easily offended and struggle taking a joke then don’t watch this. It contains, dares I say it Political (In)correctness. It was created by the same people who wrote South Park, and it will offend you. But… if you want to laugh and don’t mind some old-school banter, then you will be unable to stop slapping your knee. Don’t bring your kids though.

TINA: The Tina Turner Musical

London Tina Turner Musical

This production has received great reviews and is loved by thousands. But really what’s love got to do with it”… Sorry I just had to do it. Things look great for a Rockstar with money, clout and fame. However, things unravel for Tina and you get a look into the dark side of stardom. A great watch.

Wicked the Musical

London Wicked Musical
London Wicked Musical

Based in the world of the famous Wizard of Oz, Wicked tells its backstory. It is one of the most popular West End productions of all time. Two witches who represent opposing pillars of morality create a great spectrum for drama and fantasy. Great for a family visit to the theatre.

Hamilton

London Hamilton Musical

A lot of hype around this show and rightly so. If you’re interested in the political space, then this is probably your best bet. I personally would stay far away from British Politics, but this show is excellent. They sold out as soon as it was launched and getting tickets is something of a blessing. Worth watching!

Frozen The Musical

London Disney Frozen Musical
London Disney Frozen Musical

A Disney movie that captured the young hearts of Generation Z worldwide. The theatre production really lives up to its name. Once again, love the film, love the play. Although you will find that the play dives much deeper into the story line, with additional songs and beautiful sets.

& Juliet

London &Juliet Musical

Shakespeare is the goat. No one has ever had such a great impact on British culture through theatre productions like this guy. One of his most famous productions was Romeo and Juliet, which results in the death of the couple through suicide. But…. What if protagonist Juliet never actually died?

The show begins with her Mourning over the passing of her late husband Romeo and goes from there. Perfect if you would like to experience a new light to that epic.

The Bob Marley Musical

Worried about what show to see in London? Don’t worry, Be happy. His childhood, his marriage, his lifestyle, his near-death experience. This show encapsulates the life of an icon and reproduces the excellence he brought to the world.

Watching this will require a lot of energy. Fast pace, fast music and high levels of emotion. You may need to go to a retreat after watching this show just to catch a break. However, if you’re up for a remake of back to the future, then by all means enjoy!

Moulin Rouge

London Moulin Rouge Musical

Not at the top of the list but it definitely still makes the cut. Its based on a singer who falls in love, but secrets and behind the scene action leads to a few tasty twists in the tale.

Beauty and the Beast

London Disney Beauty and The Beast Musical

One of Disney’s finest and now one of the West End’s finest. Arrogance, wickedness, love and heroism. You most likely know this plot already so why not watch it in the magic of London’s theatre scene.

Pretty Woman

London Pretty Woman Musical

This show is about a pretty woman. But there is a lot more to it than that. A prostitute and a wealthy businessman fall in love, which is a theme that keeps coming up in this article. The two come from different worlds but are brought together one weekend while Edward is on a trip to L.A. Based in the City of Angels this is a great show to watch.

Sister Act

London Sister Act Musical

Six the Musical

London SIX the Musical

History boffin? Go forth and watch Six. It is based on King Henry and his many wives whom he decided to frequently have executed in his pursuit of a male heir to the throne. Some famous names like Anne Boleyn and Catherine of Aragon make this show what it is. A great insight to the Tudor British monarchy.

Heathers the Musical

If you lived through the 80’s then you can take a trip down memory lane with this production. It experiments with dark themes, as well as comedy and cult vibes. Not suitable for children so keep it between the parents or perhaps go watch it on a third date.

As you can see, the London theatre scene is spritely. There are so many options, and to be honest you can’t go wrong. Have a couple of scans through this list and then destiny is yours.
